What is Nainital?

Nainital is a hill station in India's Uttarakhand state. Located in the Kumaon Himalayas, Nainital was founded in 1841 by British colonizers. The town was originally known as "Naini Tal" (literally "Lake of Nails") because of the many nails hammered into the ground by the British to mark their territory. The picturesque town is situated around Naini Lake, a 1,590-meter-high glacial lake. Nainital is a popular tourist destination and is known for its natural beauty, hiking trails, and temples.

If you're looking for something a little more upscale, Nainital has no shortage of restaurants to choose from. Our favorites include The Pahadi, Oh Calcutta, and Seasons. Lakeside is a great place to wander around and find a spot for lunch or dinner. And of course, no visit to Nainital is complete without trying the famous Kumaoni malai chai—a sweet, milky tea that's perfect for warming up on a cold day.
